Other species competing for the same resources as the population under
consideration may have effects varying from minimal, for poor competitors,
to local extinction of the population if competitors are successful in
taking all of one of the necessary resources.
Plants become weeds through successful competition with desirable
plants for water, light and mineral nutrients. They may also be
detrimental to the desirable plants through release of allelopathic
chemicals that inhibit the growth of other plants.
