There are several differences in the application of scientific names and authors applied to the taxonomy of plants when compared with animals. Only the differences that commonly cause confusion for biological control workers are discussed here.

For plants, subspecies as well as varieties and forms have status as scientific names at lower than species level. Each has an author, placed in brackets if the status of genus or species is recombined. The name of a reviser is also included following the author (then placed in brackets). The name of a subsequent reviser replaces an earlier reviser.
