Growth and mortality rates
The quantity and availability of nutrients greatly influence weed growth (see
Terrestrial
and Aquatic
Plant Propagation sections). Mechanical structure of soil, particularly heavy clays, can limit seedling emergence, root growth, movement of insect larvae, formation of pupal cocoons and emergence of adult insects from pupal cocoons. Soil structure also affects moisture and gas interchange, which in turn affects insects and plants.
