The following are some general guidelines that should be followed when propagating aquatic plants:

Stability is the main aim of good plant growth, drastic fluctuations in light, temperature, nutrients, etc., will have negative and possibly lethal effects on plants.

Do not over fertilise; fertilise often, with small amounts of fertiliser and look out for deficiencies in particular nutrients.

Regular, daily monitoring of plant growth and health is essential.

Periodically remove excess plants to maintain the culture in a state of active growth by reducing competition from other plants.

Regularly check for pests and disease; isolate or destroy infected plants.

Monitor water temperature and heat if required.

Water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) and salvinia (Salvinia
molesta
) both reproduce vegetatively.
